When it comes to car insurance, pretty much the same rules apply as for any other product, namely you get what you pay for. There are many car owners that only think of it because it is mandatory and driving without proof of it might results in losing your driver’s license and registration, but other than that they consider it a nuisance and an unnecessary expense; this, for some might turn out to be true, especially if you drive rarely, you haven’t been involved in an accident in the last couple of years – and still you pay month after month. In such scenarios, going for the lowest mandatory coverage in your state and the cheapest car insurance is definitely the way to go.

Nevertheless, in the US alone, there are more than 10 million vehicle accidents per year, some of them minor, but others resulting in serious damage or injuries. If you consider the compensation for a person injured alone, they might turn out to be significant. Besides medical bills, you are liable for paying the wages they should have received while unable to work and other damages for pain and suffering which they claim. To all this, you have to add the costs of repairing the vehicle or other damages like a broken fence or other types of property destroyed. In such cases, you might notice that the mandatory state minimum might not cover the entire amount you are liable for and you will have to come up with the difference, which could mean even thousands of euros. This is why you shouldn’t stick with just the legal coverage, especially if you live in a state where it is very low.

Apart from the problems of choosing the cheapest option in terms of liability, you must remember that this insurance will not cover the damage for your own car. For that you require additional clauses that will cover the expenses for your own medical expenses and your own vehicle. There are also a lot of potential risks, where you can’t sue the guilty party. If you find your car damaged in the morning due to a hit and run by a John Doe, due to a fallen tree, a fire or any other form of damage not expressly covered by your insurance policy, you will not be compensated. If you always park your car in a garage, than the risks are minimum and you must not worry about comprehensive coverage, but if you don’t you might want to think about it.

An insurance company is a form of business like any other, meaning that it is designed to make profit. You will not get a premium product for a small price, which is fine as long as you do not need to use it. But if you go for the cheapest product, don’t be surprised if it is of no use to you, you get exactly what you pay for – a small premium will usually bring you low coverage.
